Boiler Not Working in Freezing Weather? Check This Pipe

It's freezing outside, and suddenly your boiler starts making a gurgling noise and shuts down, displaying a fault code. Before you panic, check outside—you likely have a frozen condensate pipe.

What's Causing the Issue?

Modern condensing boilers extract extra heat from exhaust gases, creating a small amount of acidic wastewater. This water drains outside through a white plastic pipe (the condensate pipe). In sub-zero temperatures, this water can freeze, blocking the pipe. The boiler senses the blockage and safely shuts down.

What You Can Do Right Now

You can usually thaw the pipe yourself safely:

• 1. Locate the pipe: Find the white plastic pipe coming from the wall behind your boiler and running to an outside drain.
• 2. Apply warm water: Pour warm (NOT boiling) water over the frozen section of the pipe using a watering can or jug. Boiling water can crack the plastic.
• 3. Use a hot water bottle: Alternatively, wrap a hot water bottle around the pipe to gently thaw the ice block.
• 4. Reset the boiler: Once thawed, press the reset button on your boiler. It should fire up normally.

When It Becomes Serious

If the pipe splits due to the ice expanding, or if the freezing has backed up water into the boiler itself, it can damage internal electrical components like the PCB.

When to Call an Engineer

If you've thawed the pipe but the boiler still won't reset, or if the pipe is too high up to reach safely, call a professional. We can also permanently fix the issue by lagging (insulating) the pipe or rerouting it internally.
